Using ChatGPT in Your Business: A Practical Introduction

March 30th, 2023

Note: I wrote this in early 2023, when ChatGPT was new to most businesses. The specific models have moved on since, but the use cases below still hold.

When ChatGPT launched, nearly every business owner I spoke with asked some version of the same question: "What can this actually do for us?" Here is my answer, without the hype.

What ChatGPT Is

ChatGPT is a conversational AI from OpenAI, built on the GPT family of large language models. It is good at understanding context, drafting and summarizing text, and answering questions in plain language. It is not a search engine and it is not always right, so treat its output as a fast first draft, not a final answer.

Where It Actually Helps

Customer support. A well-scoped assistant can handle common, repetitive questions instantly and hand the hard ones to a person. The win is deflecting volume, not replacing your support team.

Content drafting. It is genuinely useful for first drafts of posts, product descriptions, and email campaigns. You still need a human to edit for accuracy and voice, otherwise everything starts to sound the same.

Internal communication. Summarizing long threads, drafting routine emails, and turning meeting notes into action items are low-risk, high-value tasks.

Working with data. Paired with your own tools, it lets non-technical staff ask questions of data in plain language. Keep sensitive data out of public tools unless you are on an enterprise or API tier with the right data controls.

Sentiment analysis. It can read customer feedback and social posts and summarize how people feel about your product, which is useful for marketing and product decisions.

How to Start Without Wasting Money

  1. Pick one use case where you already feel the pain, not five at once.
  2. Check the data and privacy implications before anything customer-facing touches it.
  3. Run a small pilot and measure it against what you do today, then scale only what works.
  4. Keep a human in the loop. The failure mode I see most often is trusting the output blindly.

The Honest Take

ChatGPT is a capable assistant, not a strategy. The businesses getting value from it are the ones that picked a specific, measurable problem and kept people in control of the output. Start small, stay skeptical, and expand what works.
